Roller Banner Sizes Explained: Which Width Do You Need?
Quick answer: Most roller banners in the UK stand 2150mm tall, with width being the main decision. 850mm wide is the standard, most popular size for exhibitions, receptions and general event use. Go wider (1000–1200mm) for busier stands or more visual impact, and 1500–2000mm for stage backdrops or large venues. Print Studio Scotland stocks widths from 800mm to 2000mm across its roller banner range, plus A4/A3 desktop banners and a dedicated 850mm outdoor system, all printed in-house in Paisley.
Standard Roller Banner Dimensions
Almost every full-size roller banner on the market — ours included — is built to a standard height of around 2150mm. That's tall enough to be seen clearly over a standing crowd without looking oversized on a stand. Because height rarely changes, width is what actually determines how much visual impact, text and imagery your banner can carry, and how it will look in your specific space.
Roller Banner Width Guide by Use Case
800–850mm — the standard, all-purpose width
This is the most popular width by a distance, and for good reason: it fits comfortably in almost any stand space, doorway or corridor, while still commanding attention at eye level. If you're not sure what to order, this is the safe, versatile choice — our Economy Roller Banner (800mm) and the 850mm options across the Everyday, Luxe and Duo ranges all sit in this bracket. See our Economy vs Everyday vs Luxe comparison for help choosing between them.
1000–1200mm — more presence, still portable
A step up in width without losing portability. Good for stands with a bit more floor space, busier exhibition halls where you're competing for attention, or when your design needs more room to breathe — product ranges, multiple logos, longer messaging. Available across our Everyday, Luxe, Duo and Super Wide ranges.
1500–2000mm — backdrops and large venues
At this width, a roller banner stops being a "stand accessory" and becomes a backdrop in its own right — think stage sets, award ceremony backgrounds, reception walls, or exhibition bays with generous space. Our Super Wide Roller Banner is built specifically for this, with two support poles for stability across the extra width.
A4 / A3 — desktop and counter use
A completely different scale for a completely different job: our Desktop Roller Banner brings the same pull-up mechanism down to A4 (210 × 327mm) or A3 (297 × 450mm), designed to sit on a counter, reception desk or bar top rather than the floor.

How Much Space Do You Actually Have?
Before choosing a width, measure your stand, counter or backdrop space and allow a little breathing room either side — a banner that's too wide for its spot looks cramped, and one that's too narrow gets lost. As a rough guide:
- Shell scheme exhibition stand (2m x 2m or 2m x 3m): 800–850mm is usually the better fit, positioned to one side so it doesn't block the stand entrance.
- Open floor space or larger bay: 1000–1200mm gives more presence without overwhelming the area.
- Stage, entrance wall or dedicated backdrop: 1500–2000mm, or consider pairing two banners side by side for maximum width.
- Reception desk, counter or bar: A4 or A3 desktop banner — full-size banners are usually too tall and heavy for a counter setting.
Viewing Distance: How Big Should Your Text Be?
Width affects how much content you can fit, but viewing distance determines how big that content needs to be to actually be read. As a general design rule of thumb, headline text should be roughly 25–30mm tall for every metre of expected viewing distance — so a headline meant to be read from 3 metres away should be at least 75–90mm tall. If your banner will typically be viewed from further back (a large hall or stage), favour a wider format with fewer, bigger words rather than dense paragraphs. Indoor vs Outdoor Sizing
Our Outdoor Roller Banner is only available in one size — 850mm wide — but it's built entirely differently to the indoor range: 440gsm weatherproof PVC rather than 420gsm Endure material, extra-long twist-out feet, a reinforced spring pole to absorb wind movement, and four ground guide pegs. If you need an outdoor display wider than 850mm, get in touch and we'll advise on options.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size of a roller banner?
Most roller banners are 2150mm tall, with 800–850mm being the most common and popular width for general exhibition, event and reception use.
What's the difference between an 850mm and a 1000mm roller banner?
Both stand 2150mm tall. The 1000mm version gives roughly 18% more graphic width, useful for fitting more content or making more visual impact in a busier setting, but it's slightly less compact to transport and position than the 850mm standard size.
Do all roller banners have the same height?
Full-size roller banners are almost always 2150mm tall regardless of width, since height is set by the pole and cassette mechanism rather than the graphic. Desktop banners and outdoor banners are the exceptions, with their own dedicated dimensions.
What size is a desktop roller banner?
Print Studio Scotland's Desktop Roller Banner is available in A4 (210mm × 327mm) or A3 (297mm × 450mm), with the bottom 30mm of each hidden behind the base once assembled.
Can I get a custom width roller banner?
Our standard range covers 800mm up to 2000mm, which suits the vast majority of orders. If you have a specific requirement outside these widths, contact us at quotes@printstudioscotland.com and we'll advise what's possible.
What size roller banner do I need for a stage backdrop?
For stage backdrops or large entrance walls, our 1500–2000mm Super Wide Roller Banner is the best fit, and multiple units can be positioned side by side for even greater width.
