3D Foil Business Cards: Everything You Need to Know

Quick answer: 3D Foil Business Cards pair our standard full-colour print on 450gsm silk card with a raised, metallic Scodix foil applied to your logo or design elements, in Gold or Silver. Prices start at £69 for 100 cards, with a 5 working day turnaround. As with our Spot UV range, Print Studio Scotland manages your order, artwork and quality control throughout, but the Scodix foil finishing itself is carried out by a specialist outsourced partner — dedicated Scodix equipment is a significant investment that very few printers, us included, run in-house.

What Is 3D Foil?

Traditional foil stamping presses a flat metallic foil onto paper using heat and a die. Scodix foil is different: it's a digital embellishment process that builds up a genuinely raised, three-dimensional metallic finish — not flat, but a coating you can actually feel. Applied to a logo, initials, brand mark or decorative border in Gold or Silver, against our Soft Touch laminate base, it creates one of the most eye-catching finishes in our range.

Why Is the Scodix Foil Finish Outsourced?

We're upfront about this: unlike our HQ and Luxe ranges, which are printed entirely in-house at our Paisley studio, the Scodix foil stage of these cards is carried out by a trusted specialist finishing partner. The machinery involved is expensive and highly specialised, and not something most commercial printers — us included — run on-site. Rather than fake the effect with a flat, lower-quality hot foil stamp just to keep production under one roof, we work with a specialist who has invested in genuine Scodix technology.

Your order, artwork checks and final quality control stay with us throughout. This extra production stage, at a specialist site, is also why Foil takes 5 working days and starts from a higher price point than HQ or Luxe.

Who Orders Foil Business Cards?

Foil is a favourite with luxury brands, hospitality businesses, jewellers, financial advisors and creative directors — anyone whose first impression needs to say quality and prestige immediately. It's also a popular gifting option for senior staff or client-facing teams.

Supplying Artwork

Foil cards need two files: your standard print-ready PDF, and a separate PDF showing the foil areas as a solid black shape. If you're not sure how to prepare this, our artwork team can create the foil layer for you — contact us for pricing before placing your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3D Foil printed in-house or outsourced?

The order and artwork checks are managed by us throughout, but the raised Scodix foil finishing stage is carried out by a specialist outsourced partner with dedicated Scodix equipment — the same reason our 3D Spot UV range is also outsourced for its finishing stage.

What's the difference between Scodix foil and traditional foil stamping?

Traditional foil stamping is flat — pressed onto the surface. Scodix builds up a genuinely raised, three-dimensional metallic coating you can feel, for a more sophisticated and durable result.

Can I choose both gold and silver foil on the same order?

Each order uses a single foil colour. If you need cards in both gold and silver, place two separate orders — both colours can't be combined on the same card.

Can foil be applied to both sides?

Our standard foil option is applied to one side. For specific requirements, email quotes@printstudioscotland.com and we'll advise what's possible.

What's the difference between Foil and Spot UV?

Both use Scodix technology for a raised, three-dimensional finish. Foil applies a raised metallic coating in gold or silver for a decorative, luxurious look. Spot UV uses a raised clear gloss varnish for a shinier, more contemporary effect. See our 3D Spot UV Business Cards guide for more detail.
