Coated vs Uncoated vs Recycled Paper: Which Should Your Brochure Use?

Coated: The Default, and Usually the Right One

Coated papers have a surface layer applied during manufacture that seals the paper fibres. Because ink and toner sit on that sealed surface rather than sinking into the fibre, colours appear brighter, sharper and more saturated, and fine detail holds far better.

Our coated range is Novatech, specifically designed for high-quality dry-toner digital printing, with the whiteness and opacity that keep colour faithful across a long run. It comes in silk and gloss:

• Silk — smooth, low-sheen. Vibrant colour without glare, and comfortable to read at length. The versatile everyday choice for brochures, leaflets and booklets.
• Gloss — high-shine. Intensifies colour and makes photography leap off the page. Ideal where visual impact takes centre stage.

Choose coated if: your brochure carries photography, product shots or strong brand colour, and it will be read rather than written on. If you are unsure between the two, silk. It flatters almost everything and is far easier on the eye for body copy.

Uncoated: Softer, Warmer, More Trusted

Uncoated paper has no surface treatment. The natural fibres stay exposed, so ink absorbs slightly into the sheet rather than sitting on top. Colours are less vivid than on coated stock — there is no getting around that — but the result feels more natural and considerably more tactile.

Two things make uncoated the right call rather than a compromise. First, it takes pen and pencil beautifully, which matters for anything with forms, notes pages, or a spec someone will annotate. Second — and this is genuinely worth weighing — uncoated reads as more understated and more trustworthy. It is why accountancy firms, law practices, universities, charities and heritage organisations keep choosing it. A glossy brochure signals sell; an uncoated one signals substance.

Choose uncoated if: the brochure is text-led, someone will write on it, or the impression you want is credibility rather than sparkle. It pairs particularly well with wire binding.

Recycled: The Environmental Choice, Properly Made

Evolution Recycled is made entirely from post-consumer recycled waste — paper that has already been used, collected and given a new life — with its high whiteness achieved without chlorine bleach. It offers good opacity, consistent sheet formation and excellent resistance to ageing. FSC certified.

In hand it behaves much like an uncoated sheet: softer colour, natural texture, comfortable to write on. The quality gap that people expect from recycled stock simply is not there any more, and has not been for years.

Recycled or FSC Virgin Fibre — Which Is Actually Greener?

This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is that it depends what you are optimising for.

Evolution Recycled is made entirely from post-consumer waste. It diverts paper already in circulation from disposal and closes the loop completely. If your priority is reducing demand for new fibre and keeping material in use, this is your stock.

Soporset Uncoated uses virgin fibre, but it is responsibly sourced from FSC certified forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits, it carries the EU Ecolabel for environmental excellence, and it is fully recyclable after use. Well-managed forestry is a legitimate part of a sustainable paper cycle — recycled fibre cannot exist without virgin fibre entering the system somewhere.

Both are defensible. Neither is greenwashing. We would rather set that out than let you pick on assumption, and if you need to justify the choice to a board or a client, we will help you word it.

Mixing Stocks in One Brochure

You are not restricted to one stock throughout, and some of the best brochures we produce are not. A coated silk cover with uncoated inners gives you sharp cover photography and a soft, readable, writable interior. An uncoated cover on a coated text block does the reverse — understated outside, vivid inside.
